Tobacco addiction, or nicotine dependence, which is usually acquired during adolescence, is a chronic disease affecting approximately 25% of the population. Smoking itself is a cause of chronic diseases and cancers and worsens pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, chronic lung diseases, and kidney diseases. As highlighted by the World Health Organization (see image), quitting smoking brings both immediate and long-term benefits.
In our practice, patients who wish to quit smoking or even just reduce their tobacco and nicotine consumption (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, snus, puff bars, shisha, etc.) are cared for by Dr Valentina Bianchi Galdi, a tobacco addiction specialist, who guides and supports them through a personalised change process.
Dr Bianchi Galdi, a specialist in tobacco addiction treatment, has been active in this field for years and is a member of numerous national and international committees for the prevention and treatment of smoking.
The first consultation lasts approximately 60 minutes, while follow-up appointments last 20–30 minutes.
Consultations can take place either in person at the practice or remotely via video consultation. A computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone is required.
The nicotine cessation programme, following an initial assessment aimed at collecting all necessary data to develop a personalised treatment plan, includes:
- Level of dependence and/or withdrawal symptoms;
- Motivation for change;
- Symptoms related to anxiety and depression;
All consultations are covered by basic health insurance (LAMal).
